1980s Vintage Neoclassical Empire Style Faux Burl Painted Glass Coffee Table

There is so much to say about this amazing and unusual coffee table. The table features an over 1/2″ thick glass top with a visually striking “compass rose” star in the center encircled by a Grecian wave motif over a faux burl texture. The design has been applied to the underside of the glass and appears to have been painted on with a “verre églomisé” technique complete with gilt gold accents that gives it a deep lustrous shine. The design is sealed with a velvet-like protective cover. The legs are faux burl-wrapped steel with solid brass claw feat and accents that hearken to the Neoclassical Empire style. There are no brands or marks to identify this piece. Eclectic is perhaps the best we can find to describe this table, but it may be similar to the highly sought after works of Gio Ponti or Maison Jensen.

moreSince this is a vintage item please expect plenty of small imperfections including light scratches on the glass top, tarnish on the brass metal accents, and a few chips/scratches in the burl-wrap on the steel legs where you can see the metal underneath. There are a few areas along the bottom edge of the glass where the velvet covering is becoming separated and from above at certain angles it looks like “bubbles” in the glass. Three of these bubbles are more noticeable measuring approximately 6″ and 2.5″ and 1″ respectively with the other less noticeable bubbles measuring 1/2″ or less. We have METICULOUSLY cleaned and inspected this piece and of found no major damages or defects. There are no chips or cracks in the glass. Overall this is a clean and handsome looking coffee table that displays well from all angles. less
