England, late 19th century, circa 1880–1890.
Why we like it
We love its clean lines and the intricacy of the contrasting inlays to the front panel. Perfect for a sculpture, a bust, a vase, a candelabrum, and even a flower pot.
Its plain yet sophisticated look reflects the tremendous influence of the British architect Robert Adam on 18th and 18th century furniture design and interior decoration. Inspired by the exotic artefacts from the classical Greek and Roman Antiquity, unearthed during the numerous excavations, including those at Pompeii and Herculaneum, he introduced a new manner of subtle decoration, later known as the Neoclassical.
