In our 101 years of being in the Georgian Antiques business, this bureau, quite frankly, may be the finest that has graced our premises. Apparently made from Red Walnut (though it could be argued that it is a form of mahogany) and exceptionally inlaid in various exotic woods including satinwood in the “Adam” style, this is one of the most perfectly proportioned and well made slant front bureaus or desks. The drawer linings are oak and the exceptional cast brass Chippendale styl;e brasses are of the period and quite probably original to the desk. The leather writing surface, though antique, most likely would have been replaced in its 220 plus years (from its original baize, most likely.) The inlays throughout are exceptional, evidencing extraordinary detail including some period “penwork” (see illustrations). There are the age appropriate shrinkage areas, also illustrated, but it is in superb condition for its age. The dimensions arew listed elsewhere and are overall, but this bureau is 38.75″ wide at the waist and has a 29.5″ kneehole clearance when the fall is lowered. Please noite the gorgeous fitted interior, made from inlaid mahogany and the beautiful “Adam” urn inlay on the prospect door. Both keys are retained. This is NOT your typical, fine Geo. III period slant front bureau, but rather of exceptional, museum quality a true “one off”!
